Holy Week

Monday of Holy Week, March 21

Isaiah 42:1-7; John 12:1-11

Mary took a liter of costly perfumed oil made from genuine aromatic nard and anointed the feet of Jesus and dried them with her hair; the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil. – John 12:3

Mary went above and beyond to display her love for Jesus. In what way do I go above and beyond to display my love for Jesus?

Lord, help me to better show you my love. Remove from me any embarrassment of openly displaying me love for you. Help me to be strong and forthright in my love for you. Only then will I fully appreciate how much you love me.

Tuesday of Holy Week, March 22

Isaiah 49:1-6; John 13:21-33, 36-38

When he had said this, Jesus was deeply troubled and testified, “Amen, amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” John 13:21

Jesus predicts Peter’s denial of him. In what ways do I also deny Jesus?

Lord, there are times when I hold back because to talk about you is not a popular subject. Grant me the courage to always and everywhere proclaim my love for you regardless of the audience. Never let fear cause me to deny you as Peter did.

Wednesday of Holy Week, March 23

Isaiah 50:4-9a; Matthew 26:14-25

“And while they were eating, he said, “Amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” – Mt 26:21

Jesus announces that one of the twelve will betray him. They all wonder who it is.

Is it me? Have I turned my back on Jesus – through sin or denial of him? Lord, I never wish to betray you, but sometimes it is very hard not to. Grant me the strength to resist those times that I am tempted to betray you.

Holy Thursday, March 24

Exodus 12:1-8, 11-14; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26; John 13:1-15

I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do. – John 13:15

Jesus humbled himself to wash the feet of the apostles. When do I humble myself, as Jesus did, to help others?

Lord, I know we are called to aid our brothers in their need. Sometimes it is easier to look in the other direction when confronted with someone in need. Grant me the courage to step up and help those in need around me, regardless of the cost to me. Only when I humble myself will I then be exalted in your eyes.

Good Friday, March 25

Isaiah 52:13-53:12; Hebrews 4:14-16; 5:7-9; John 18:1-19:42

Then he handed him over to them to be crucified. – John 19:16

Today, dear Lord, I hear the reading of your passion and death on Calvary. What part do I play in this horrendous event? Have I added to your crown of thorns by my sins? Have I added length to the nails in your flesh by my laziness?

Help me, Lord, to see where I have failed you and caused you pain. Grant me the strength to amend my life to draw me closer to you and to cause you less pain. I love you Lord Jesus – It has never been my intention to cause you any discomfort.

Holy Saturday, March 26

Genesis 1:1-2:2; Genesis 22:1-18; Exodus 14:15-15:1; Isaiah 54:5-14; Isaiah 55:1-11; Baruch 3:9-15, 32-4:4; Ezekiel 36:16-17a, 18:28; Romans 6:3-11; Luke 24:12

They found the stone rolled away from the tomb; but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. – Luke 24:2-3

The women went to his tomb to anoint him and found him gone. How afraid were they? They are told that he has risen from the dead as he promised he would do. Did they immediately believe?

I am always being told of marvelous things that are attributed to Jesus. Am I quick to believe or am I a skeptic? Lord, I know you are my God. I believe that you can do anything. Help me to better see the wonders you work in my world every day. Take away all my doubts. I do believe – Help me in my unbelief.
