“Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord.” – Luke 19:38
We read this line and we grimace. We know Jesus is the king but we also know what will happen in Jerusalem. We know all of these people shouting hosannas will turn their backs on him and will yell, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”
We know that His kind of kingdom was not understood by these parade watchers in Jerusalem. Jesus’ kind of kingdom is not always understood in our world either. And Jesus knew that would happen. He knew how the world would treat us.
At the Last Supper he told the disciples, “If the world hates you, realize that it hated me first. – John 15:19
Jesus’ kingdom is not about conforming to the world and following public opinion polls. Jesus’ kingdom is about conforming the world to Christ.
And so we begin Holy Week. As we make our journey with Jesus to Easter, let us remember to put God first in our lives. Let us worship and adore our Lord and King.
Dear Jesus, help me to make you the Lord of my life everyday. Help me to put you first in my life and to always try to do your will, and not just when it is comfortable or easy to do so. And help us all to grow closer to you as we celebrate this Holy Week. Amen.
