St. Anthony of Padua, Priest and Doctor of the Church

1 Kgs 21:1-16; Matthew 5:38-42

But I say to you, offer no resistance to one who is evil. When someone strikes you on [your] right cheek, turn the other one to him as well. – Mt 5:39

Do I need Jesus’ help to let go of hurts and to forgive?

Lord, it is hard to forgive those hurts that really cut us. Help me to better understand your teaching in this matter. Grant me the courage to let these hurts go and to forgive the offender. Because it is how I forgive that I will be forgiven.

Tues., June 14, 2016

1 Kgs 21:17-29; Matthew 5:43-48

But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your heavenly Father, for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the good, and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust. – Mt 5:44-45

Do I love my enemies – Do I pray for those who are against me?

Lord, this is one of the hardest things for me to do. I need your constant help to love those against me and to pray for them. Grant me the strength to love and forgive all who are against me and the courage to pray for them daily.

2 Kgs 2:1, 6-14; Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18

But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right is doing, so that your almsgiving may be secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you. – Mt 6:3-4

Jesus tells us to do our good deeds in secret. Am I guilty of being showy as I do a good deed?

Lord, there are times when I want the whole world to see the good that I do. Help me to have the strength to do any good quietly and in secret. It is important that you and you alone know when I do good for others.

Thurs., June 16, 2016

Sir 48:1-14; Matthew 6:7-15

If you forgive others their transgressions, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your transgressions. – Mt 6:14-15

Jesus tells us that as we forgive others so will the Father forgive us. Who do I most need to forgive in my life?

Lord, forgiveness is so hard. Help me to forgive all those who have wronged me. Grant me the understanding to see who I need to forgive and the courage to grant that forgiveness. Then I may also be forgiven by the Father.

Fri., June 17, 2016

2 Kgs 11:1-4, 9-18, 20; Matthew 6:19-23

For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be. – Mt 6:21

Jesus says that where our treasure is, there is where our hearts will be. Where is my treasure and how can I focus more on treasures that bring me closer to you?

Lord, I am so attached to my material stuff that it sometimes gets in between you and me. Help me to give up my attachment to things of this world. My heart belongs to you and that is where all my treasure is centered.
