Do Not Be Afraid

Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. – Lk 1:30-31

Do not be afraid.

I love those words. The hymn “Be Not Afraid” is one of my favorites. I tend to be a fearful type. Anxious. The song  – these words – remind me to let the fears go.

So this young girl is chosen to be the Mother of God. Must have surprised her neighbors when they found out. And who could blame her if she was afraid? But she knew this was from God. This was an angel talking to her. She knew it in a way that cannot be explained and yet sometimes happens to us. Those times  – those encounters with God – when we just know. We just know that God is asking for a big Yes from us.

Try to remember (and ponder) the last time when you were told  – “Be not afraid.”

Were you afraid?

Did you trust God?

Did you say Yes?

  1. I struggle with being completely trusting and faithful. Following Mary or Abraham, come to think of it, sure isn’t easy for me.
