“and forgive us our sins
for we ourselves forgive everyone in debt to us,
and do not subject us to the final test.” – Lk 11:4
My husband and I were once asked to write a reflection on the Lord’s Prayer and present it to our prayer group. We each took sections of it and one of the sections I had was about forgiveness.
Forgiveness was something that I had been struggling with for quite a while. I knew that I forgave my father for abusing me, but it seemed as if I had to forgive him over and over. It didn’t “stick.”
It is not so much about how we feel. It is a decision we make. We may not feel all warm and fuzzy inside, but forgiving someone who deeply hurt us is often the best gift we can give ourselves.
Jesus, thank you for forgiving me. Help me to know when I need to forgive. Help me to know that forgiving others is as much a gift to myself as it is to them.
It’s also hard for me to forget some times after I have forgiven someone. That for me is the hard part.

Barb, I agree. Forgetting a deep hurt is very difficult.

thank you Colleen, I hope you are well…forgiveness is a gift when given and received…when you don’t forgive you burden yourself.
