“Thus will it be for all who store up treasure for themselves but are not rich in what matters to God.” – Luke 12:21
Treasure.
What is treasure to you?
What does it mean to be rich in what matters to God?
I ask myself these questions as I ponder this Sunday’s gospel. For me, my treasure is my family and my friends and my faith.
Of course, there are other kinds of treasure. Money. Possessions. The kind of “treasure” that can get us into trouble if we mess up our priorities.
In other words, stuff. Stuff that we want to hang onto because we think we need it.
My husband and I just recently moved from a three bedroom condo to a one bedroom condo. We had to get rid of lots of stuff. It was difficult at first, deciding what to lose and what to keep.
In the middle of all of this packing and giving our “treasure” away, we were in a car accident. Resting at home those first few days, in shock and in pain, the last thing on our minds were our possessions. We could only feel grateful to be alive. We could only feel grateful to have each other.
Letting go of stuff did not matter much after that.
Thank you, Lord, for the treasure you have given us. The treasure of family and friends and faith. May we always remember that we are rich in what matters. Amen.
