The Life Within

Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you.” – John 6:53

The child sexual abuse crisis in the Church had me feeling sad and angry and lonely. I felt sick inside. I felt tempted to leave the Church.

Because of the abusing priests.

Because of the church members who did not believe the children.

Because I am an incest survivor.

But then I thought of the Eucharist. I had become Catholic in the first place because of the Eucharist. I couldn’t leave.

If I left, I would “not have life within me.”

So I wrote a book about my childhood and the abuse. I spoke out for the abuse survivors.

And I stayed in the Church. I stayed “home.”

Jesus, thank you for your love. Thank you for the life within me. Amen.
