Loving Our Neighbor

“The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:31

It is easy to understand the verse before this one – to love the Lord your God with all your heart. It is easy to do, too, I might add. God is so good. God loves us so much. How can we not love Him back?

But what about loving our neighbor as ourselves? That is much harder.

Especially if we have a hard time loving ourselves.

It took years of prayer and a good spiritual director and a loving husband to help me understand that I was worthy of love. That I could love myself and feel ok in my own skin.

If God loved me, it was ok for me to love me.

And if God loved others, it was ok for me to love them.

Jesus, thank you for loving me. And for helping me to love my neighbor. And myself. Amen.
