Sabbath Rest

“That is why the Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath.” – Mark 2:28

When I was a little girl, I remember that Sundays were for rest. And for family. I enjoyed them. We would go to church. Have a big dinner at home or at my grandparents’ house.

Sometimes we went to the beach. Often we would go for a ride on country roads, stopping for ice cream, of course. A special treat.

At some point, Sundays seemed to change. They were almost like any other day. Yes, we’d go to church, but did we observe the sabbath rest?

As a teenager, I remember going to the malls. Shopping and hanging out with friends. As a nurse, I often worked on Sundays, leaving my husband and boys at home. I found myself missing those sabbath days.

Now retired, an empty-nester, I am back to observing the sabbath. Resting on Sundays. And spending time with our children and grandchildren. Now my husband and I are the grandparents they visit.

What joy.

  1. Dennis Prager says observing the Sabbath is key to his productivity throughout the week. It used to be that in Vermont you couldn’t run for public office unless you observed the Sabbath.

I’m old enough to remember when shops were closed on Sundays.
