John the Baptist

He asked for a tablet and wrote, “John is his name,” and all were amazed. – Lk 1:63

John is His name.

Oh, little did they know who he was or who he was to become. John the Baptist. The prophet. Jesus’ cousin.

And so much more.

In this gospel reading, Zechariah, who had not been able to talk throughout Elizabeth’s pregnancy, suddenly speaks. He had resisted God’s plan and been struck mute. When he finally accepts God’s will, his voice returns.

Do I also sometimes resist God’s plans for me? And when I do, do I sometimes miss that peace in my heart? Do I feel out of sorts?  Do I have a hard time hearing His voice?

Lord, help me to hear Your voice and to follow You wherever you lead me. No matter how uncomfortable. Amen.
